Lost And Accidents

Q:Who should I ask for help if I mislay my passport?
A:Ask your guide for help and report the loss to the nearest Public Security Bureau (PSB) branch immediately, who will then issue you with a certificate of loss. You will need to apply for a new passport in person at the nearest embassy or consulate of your own country, where you will usually be required to fill in a lost passport application. With the new passport issued, you need to go to the PSB to get a new Visa, then you can continue your trip or leave China. Remember that the relevant departments are usually closed on Saturdays, Sundays and Chinese Holidays.

Q:What to do if I lose my wallet with cash and credit card in it?
A:f something valuable like cash and bank cards are lost, or you are robbed by thieves or muggers, do not hesitate to report the incident to the police immediately (call 110 toll free). The Public Security Bureau of China with many stations in each city, is in charge of such matters, and will handle your loss efficiently. If you are in a hotel, ask the hotel staff to help you and contact the police. Although China is a relatively safe country for tourists, it always pays to take basic precautions with your belongings.

Q:What can I do when I am involved in a traffic accident?
A:If you are involved in a traffic accident or other unexpected altercation, keep calm. If it is safe to do so, try not to leave or alter the scene of the accident and immediately call the police (110). Remembering the sequence of events that lead to the accident may help you when providing information to the police.

 

Currency Exchange

Q:Can you provide me some basic information about Chinese currency?
A:The Chinese currency is known as Renminbi (RMB). Officially, the basic unit of RMB is the Yuan, which is divided into 10 Jiao, which again is divided into 10 Fen. The Fen has so little value these days that it is rarely used. The People's Bank of China (PBC) issues RMB bills in denominations of one, two, five, 10, 20, 50 and 100 Yuan. Coins come in denominations of one Yuan, five and one Jiao, and one, two and five fen (the last are rare).
ATMs that take foreign cards are widespread but try to use the Bank of China, the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC) and HSBC. However, ATMs are also widely available at tourist hotels of four-star and above, shopping malls and de- partment stores. Many ATMs have 24 hours service.

Q:Can you provide me some information about banks in Shanghai? How can I ex- change currency in Shanghai?
A:There are a large number of banks with different brands in Shanghai where you can get different currency conveniently. See Banks section in detail.

Q:What are the maximum U.S dollars I can carry in cash and also travelers' cheque? And if more then the required limit where can I apply for permit?
A:5,000 US dollars and 20,000 RMB can be taken into China. If the money you take exceeds that limitation, you need to apply for permit. You can apply for a permit in Bank of China. There are no limitations toward travelers' cheque.

Q:How can I open credit card in china?
A:Foreigners can apply for a credit card in China. You should provide your passport and the copy of your passport as well as the certification document of your earning. Well, if you are jobless (a student), you should provide the bank with your student card and other certification documents offered by your school. If you have a credit card of your country, you can provide bank with a copy of this card. I suggest you go to consult the clerks in the bank.

Q:What if my bank account & bank card were lost? Will I get them replaced instantly on the same day at the bank? What procedure do I need to do in order to get my new bank account & card replaced?
A:Firstly, you need to report the lost to the bank, and then the bank will frozen your account that no one can take money from your account. Then you need to take you ID card and bank card & bank account (you are not supposed to lost both of the two) to have a new one. But it may take about a week to have a new one.

Q:Can I withdraw money over the counter at the bank (Bank of China) by just present my account number with my picture ID or passport?
A:No, you need to take your bank account or bank card.

Q:Where is currency exchange service available? 
A:There are currency exchange services at Shanghai Pudongl International Airport and top-end (Normally 4 stars to 5 stars) hotels. All branches of Bank of China and other large banks offers currency exchange services. Look for a signwhen you walk into a bank outlet.

Tips:

  1. Remember to take your passport, which need to be presented when converting currency in China.
  2. you can ask them to give you a 100 Yuan of small change. It strongly advised to take some small change with you.
  3. You can exchange the unused Renminbi back in other currency when you leave China. Please keep all your currency exchange receipts, which you must present. However, such exchange can be quite unfavorable in rates; you'd better use all your RMB before you left.
  4. Do not exchange money in the street or the small shops which is mostly illegal and sometimes forgeries may be given.

Phone Tips:
1. Do not leave your cell phone lying around; always put it in a safe place.
2. Do not call back a strange number without good reason as you may be the target of a swindler. They will call you, but hang up quickly. If you call back, the charge will be much higher than the normal rate.

Q:Can I use my phone to make international call directly?
A:No, you need to go to the business hall of your supplier to activate the service with your ID card presented. What's more, there must be RMB500 installed at least.

Q:Can use my cell phone in China?
A:Most of the cell phones bought in foreign countries cannot be normally used in China. However, some of the high-end phones are compatible. Please consult the manufacturer of your cell phone before your trip.
Note: The international roaming charge can be very high; it is strongly advised to use a local SIM card in China.

Q:What if I want to have a cell phone in China?
A:You can buy a cell phone in China. Many well-known world class brands of cell-phone like Nokia, Motorola, Sony Ericsson, Samsung, among others, are sold in franchised stores or large-scale emporia of China.

Q:Can I use the phone I bought to make calls directly?
A:No. After you purchase a new cell phone in China, it will be necessary to have a Chinese SIM card inserted in the cell phone.

Q:Where to buy a SIM card?
A:You can get a SIM card at any of the cell phone shops with a copy of your ID card. Usually, a new SIM card user is required to install a certain amount of money (100 RMB at most) in the card.
Three kinds of card will be served: China Mobile SIM card China Telecom SIM card and China Unicom SIM card.

Q:After buying a SIM card, I encounter some problems such as rate inquiry, recharging and so on, to whom will I turn for help?

Q:Can I find a fax machine easily in China?
A:Yes. Public fax machines are available in many places. Scanning services etc. are also available

Q:Where to enjoy internet service?
A:Most hotels, public libraries, some restaurants and downtown cyber cafes provide free internet service. Tourists with laptops can enjoy wireless broadband Internet accessing service in these places.The internet service is available during the meeting period:The name of the Wifi - connectivityin SHICC is eswc2010.

Q:Can I access the internet in hotels?
A:In hotels of three-stars or above, you should be able to access the internet. In your room there should be provision for you to connect a laptop to the internet through a network interface. Some hotels also have a Business Center, where internet service is provided. In the Youth Hotels internet is also often available.
Note: It is free to use the internet service in some hotels, especially the bigger ones. However, do ask in advance, because some will charge and the fee may be extremely expensive!

Q:What if I want to log onto the internet without a computer?
A:There are many local internet cafes in China. Where you see the Chinese character "网吧", you can surf the internet. Be aware that the condition of internet cafes can vary widely. The cost will vary from city to city, but generally it is 1-5 Yuan per hour.
Warnings for surfing in an internet bar:
1. Take care of your personal belongings in case of theft.
2. Leave the internet bar before 9:00 at night for the sake of your personal safety.
3. To avoid fraud never use an online banking facility in an internet bar.
4. Many hotels offer the guests high-speed internet service. You can consult the hotel for more details.
5. In China, some websites are inaccessible, such as Facebook.

 

Postal Service

Q:What is the official postal service?
A:China Post (中国邮政) is the official postal service of the People's Republic of China, operated by the State Postal Bureau of the People's Republic of China.

Attention: You can ask the hotel receptionist for further information.

Q:What are the business hours of the post office?
A:The operating time is 08:00- 18:00 seven days a week, but in some remote areas, the post office may be closed on weekends.

Q:What is the rate of mailing a domestic letter in China?
A:It is not expensive at all for you to mail a domestic letter in China. The price varies according to the weight of your mail and the delivering distance.
Letter less than 100g: For each 20g, 0.6 Yuan is charged if the mail is delivered in the same city, while 0.8Yuan is for the intercity mail delivery.
Letter over 100g: For each extra 100g, 1.2 Yuan should be added for the mail delivered in the same city and 2.0 Yuan for the intercity mail.
Registered post is much faster but another 3.0 Yuan will be charged for each piece of mail as the registration fee.

Q:How long is the delivery time of a domestic letter by surface?
A:The delivery time is different based on the distance. Generally speaking, it will take 5-7 days.

Q:What if I have an urgent letter to mail?
A:It is recommended to use EMS (Express Mail Service), which is basically the best way to mail the letter or parcel. Within 3 days, the mail will be successfully delivered. If you do not want to go to the post office to mail the letter or parcel, you can just call 11185. By providing your address,  a staff member will pick your letter or parcel at your home.
